Parliamentary & local government

Our General Secretary, Roger Turner, meets regularly with Ministers, MPs and Peers to discuss current issues and keeps them up-to-date on our policies.

We are members of the Occupational Pensioners' Alliance, a group of some 40 Occupational Pensioner Associations formed to have a stronger voice to Government (www.opalliance.org.uk)

We lobby for improvements to Government legislation wherever it affects our members. For example we continue to lobby for:

Health
bullet Free personal care to be introduced into England and Wales to bring us into line with Scotland.
bullet More information to be given to residents in nursing and care homes about what they are paying for.
bullet More help for carers to allow them to cope with the heavy demands of looking after a friend or relative.
bullet Getting rid of Post Code prescribing in the NHS.
bullet Getting rid of age discrimination in the NHS.

Pensions
bullet Restoration of the earning link for pension increases.
bullet Increase the level of the basic state pension to prevent people having to apply for means-tested benefits.
bullet A trustee on pension scheme Boards of Trustees elected by the pensioner members.
bullet Improvements to the State Pension Credit.

Transport
bullet Introduction of a nationwide travel concession scheme for pensioners.
bullet Introduction of free travel for pensioners.
bullet Improvements to railway stations for easier access for older and disabled people.

General
bullet Legislation to outlaw age discrimination in employment.
bullet Working with European organisations to present a pensioner view to the European Union.
